October 24, 2011

December of 2012 is quickly becoming a popular topic about the end of the world. Several ancient civilizations have predicted this time frame to be the end of the world. What if they are right? How can we prepare ourselves for the worst disasters seen in the history or man kind? We do see a lot of young single mothers these days, bearing the burden of having made a big mistake in their life. These young singles mothers should be respected for their bravery in bringing their children to this world. In a World where everything around us seems to be mechanized and de-humanized, supporting true artisans and craftspeople is becoming increasingly important. As many traditional skills and crafts are being lost, it is paramount we acknowledge and support such artisans, without exploitation. Global ethical trading is necessarily essential - People matter. “Gold mountain” is the mythical name given to the United States by the Chinese to symbolize familial aspirations for wealth, freedom and happiness. In a playful exchange in Maxine Hong Kingston’s China Men (1989), the rubric “Gold Mountain” becomes detached from the aura of myth, owing to the pressure of painful, dehumanizing experiences undergone by generations of sojourners and settlers from the 1860’s onward. It becomes what it is - a floating signifier, a charisma-laden mana, lulling the traveler to wherever his imagination or ethos or adventurous Utopian drive take him.
